Goodnight Irene!

I will not be posting for a few days due to Hurricane Irene coming to my area. I pray that everyone is safe and nothing gets damaged. My God is bigger than any hurricane or earthquake (we got one of these earlier this week).

Hopefully I will be back online next week (if we have power). Keep us in your prayers please.

Is God Enough?

Scripture of the day: "But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you." -Matthew 6:33

Lately I have been feeling kinda down in the dumps. I have been reading my bible and praying like I should. But still something was missing. I felt alone, shut out from the world, sad about some things going on in my life. Over the past few weeks I have read a few blogs by some wonderful Christian women and a few devotions with this same theme: Is God Enough?

I sat down and really thought hard and came to a conclusion. But first I will share with you my train of thought:
  • Is God enough to be my only friend?
  • Is God enough to love me at my worst?
  • Is God enough to be there when I feel lonely or sad?
  • Is God enough for me?
My answer is YES! God IS enough. I was trying to fix my problems on my own and failing miserably. I was trying to "play God" and fix it the way He might. But His ways are not our ways. It's like I know God can do it, but do I want to step back and let Him take over? Do I want to render control of my life to Him? Yes, I do! I can't fix everything, I can't deal emotionally with everything. But God CAN! In Philippians 4:13, the bible says "I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength." That means ALL things.

I am going to surrender control of my life to the One who gives me strength. God wants us to put Him first in our lives, in everything we do. He wants to be our First Love, our Best Friend, our Strength, our Peace, our Protector.

He is our All in All (refer to the Dennis Jernigan song).

I came to the realization recently that I cannot rely on others to live up to my expectations. I have to give people the benefit of the doubt. What is important to me isn't always important to others. I have to love them like God loves me. Unconditionally, flaws and all.

God IS enough to get me through this and all challenges in life.

God Bless,

Desiring God

I received the DVD Bible series Desiring God by John Piper to review recently. I actually thought I was getting the book but was pleasantly surprised when it came in DVD form. I have never done a DVD review before so I jumped right in with much enthusiasm.

John Piper wrote a book called Desiring God and this is the small group bible study version. It is broken down into 10 sessions that are between 20 and 30 minutes long each. He is the Pastor at Bethlehem Baptist Church in Minneapolis, Minnesota (where my husband spent the first few years of his life). You can read more about him at

This DVD bible study series is recorded in a lecture-style room. John Piper is conducting the bible study personally in a lecture-style manner. I personally do not concentrate well with this type of bible study. He addresses the audience several times referring to a handout that they are following along in and taking notes. I probably would have been able to follow along better had I been provided with the handout he was referring to. He had an overhead projector with notes on it as well. He seemed very genuine and passionate about lecture.

The bible study focused on "Christian Hedonism". He said that we should pursue our joy even as Christians. We must do so in a different way than the world because we are born again and should have different ideas of what joy and happiness are to us. We are to pursue our "quest for happiness". He asked many questions as to what we delight ourselves in besides God? Is it the TV, fame, fortune, popularity? He said our ultimate goal should be to pursue God to be happy.

Pastor John Piper has put a lot of work into this bible study. I would recommend it for young adults and new Christians. I would also recommend it for anyone who has lost their joy in Christ.

God Bless,

You Love Me Anyway

Scripture of the day: "Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good. His love endures forever." -Psalm 107:1

"You love me anyway" by The Sidewalk Prophets

Dear Lord,
I mess up and sin everyday.
I hurt people who care about me.
I hold grudges and stay angry.
I judge others who don't even know it.

Yet, You love me anyway.

I yell at my children.
I snap at my husband.
I choose not to forgive those I love.
I choose not to forgive anyone.
I put my guard up and let no one in.

Yet, You love me anyway.

I question your ways.
I question your will for me.
I get mad at You when things don't go my way.
I put you last in my life.
I forget to read my bible.
I forget what you did on Calvary.

Yet, You love me anyway.

I lose my temper.
I lose my mind.
I try to change only to fail even worse.
I don't tell enough people about You.
Some people don't even know I know You.
I have enemies that I shouldn't have.

Yet, You love me anyway.

I let the world into my heart.
I let You leave my mind.
I disappoint You everyday.
I gossip and get caught in lies.
I stray from you and feel guilty.
I am a sinner and I am glad that...

You love me anyway.

Thank You for forgiving me.
Thank You for dying for me.
Thank You for Your word.
That it is true and holy.
Thank You for loving me
In spite of myself.

In Jesus' Holy Name I pray.

I wrote this prayer last week when I heard the above song. It touched my heart so deeply. I wrote this prayer in about 10 minutes because I felt the Holy Spirit so strongly saying these words to my heart. I hope you can glean something from it as I have. I give God all of the glory and honor because He deserves it. He saved me from a life of not knowing Him. Thank you Jesus for saving my soul from death.

God Bless,

Billy Graham in Quotes Review

Billy Graham is one of the most known names in evangelism in the world. His son, Franklin Graham along with Donna Lee Toney collaborated to collect all of the quotes for this book. The quotes are taken mostly from Billy Graham's writings from 1947 to 2010. Some of the section titles include Billy Graham on: Abortion, America, the Bible, Christianity, Evangelism, the Devil/Satan, Jesus, Marriage, and Salvation. There are over 100 different sections of quotes. Billy Graham has been mis-quoted many times. This book will reveal exactly what he has said over the years. The introduction was written by Billy Graham himself.

Here are a few quotes from the book:
  1. Billy Graham on America: "I believe America has gone a long way down the road. If we ever needed God's help, it is now." -p. 12
  2. on the Bible: "From one end of the Bible to the other, God assures us that He will never go back on His promises." -p. 26
  3. on the Devil/Satan: "Never forget: Satan's goal is to turn us away from God." -p. 110
  4. on Jesus: "If you want to know what God is like, then take a look at Jesus Christ." -p. 202
There are so many wonderful and insightful quotes in the book. I read and read them and couldn't stop myself. I really enjoyed talking them over with my husband. I highly recommend this book especially if you are a fan of Billy Graham like I am. I appreciate all he has done over the years for Christ.

God Bless,

"Why God?"

Scripture of the day: "The secret things belong to the LORD our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may follow all the words of this law." -Deuteronomy 29:29

Have you ever asked God "Why did you allow 'this' to happen to me" or "Why am I going through 'this'?" Most people would answer yes. We want to know why God allowed a tragedy or why there are certain difficulties in our lives. We want to know God's plan for us. I think even if He revealed His plans to us, we still wouldn't understand. It may be that God wants us to learn to trust Him more or maybe we need to work on being more patient, forgiving, humble, etc. Whatever the case may be, it is Gos who allows trials in our lives for His reasons and purpose. I always like to think of trials and difficulties as a test. If I pass the test the first time, I don't have to take it again. But if I fail, I must take the test again and again until I pass.

It has a lot to do with our reactions to things as well. God wants us to react with patience, kindness, gentleness, etc. (see Galatians 5:22-23). We must also have forgiving hearts. If someone wrongs us, we must immediately forgive them. I know, easier said than done. My husband is always saying to me "Be the bigger person...let it go." Well, I must be down right enormous by now! Haha! It is much easier to forgive than to hold a grudge and hold on to hurtful feelings and words. On the cross, Jesus cried "Forgive them, for the know not what they do." Sometimes we even get angry with God because of our circumstances. We blame Him for our difficulties and troubles. He may allow certain things to happen, but it's up to us to react according to His word and His will.

Just remember what Jesus said in the bible "Love one another". Try to love people the same way God does. Jesus died on the cross for EVERYONE! That includes the rude cashier at the grocery store, the crazy driver who cut you off on the interstate, that mean girl in your class spreading gossip, that family member who speaks harshly of others. Show them God's love. It may be just a smile or a thank you or an I forgive you.

God has a plan for you (Jeremiah 29:11). So, instead of asking "Why God?" Ask yourself, "What can I learn from this, how can I become more Christ-like through this situation?"

This week's menu:
  • Monday- Pizza
  • Tuesday- cheeseburger mac and cheese
  • Wednesday- leftovers
  • Thursday- chicken strips, mashed potatoes, corn, and biscuits
  • Friday- Take out
  • Saturday- mini cheeseburgers and hot dogs with french fries

Recipe of the week:
  • Canned Biscuit Dough Donuts (Paula Deen)
What you will need:
Oil for frying
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 cup sugar

2 cups confectioners' sugar, divided
5 tablespoons milk, divided
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4 cup cocoa powder
2 cans large buttermilk biscuits
Colored sprinkles
Chocolate sprinkles

Heat 2 inches oil in a large pot or Dutch oven  to 350 degrees F.

In a shallow bowl, stir together the ground cinnamon and sugar and set aside. In a small bowl, whisk together 1 cup of confectioners' sugar, 2 tablespoons of milk and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract, set aside. This is the vanilla icing. In another bowl, whisk together 1 cup of confectioners' sugar, 1/4 cup of cocoa powder and 3 tablespoons of milk and set aside. This is the chocolate icing.

Lay out the biscuits on a cutting board and with a 1 1/2-inch round cookie or biscuit cutter, cut out a hole from the middle of each biscuit. Fry them in the oil until golden and then flip with tongs to fry the other side. You can even fry the donut holes. Drain on paper towels and then toss in the cinnamon-sugar or ice and decorate with sprinkles, as desired.

It used to be a slow month

Scripture of the day: "Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest." -Jesus, Matthew 11:29

August used to be a slow month for family birthdays and anniversaries. Now we have at least one celebration every single week. What a joy to have so much to rejoice in. What a joy to have so much family and love and memories. Isn't that why we celebrate someone's birthday? To let the person know that we care about them and love them. So here's our list for this busy month of birthdays, get-togethers, and anniversaries that we are excited to be celebrating:
  1. August 3rd- Ducky's 1st Birthday! I can't believe my baby will be one. Happy Birthday precious boy, we love you very much!
  2. August 5th- My twin brothers will be 15! I feel old...haha! Happy Birthday!
  3. August 6th- Ducky's Birthday party celebration with friends and family.
  4. August 8th- Hubby's Gma. P.'s 88th birthday. Happy Birthday Gma.!
  5. August 12th- My nephew "Bent-Bent's" 1st Birthday! Happy Birthday Bent!
  6. August 13th- "Bent-Bent's" birthday party!
  7. August 16th- Hubby's Gpa. B.'s 87th Birthday. Happy Birthday Gpa.!
  8. August 27th- Hubby's parent's will be celebrating their...45th Anniversary!
  9. August 29th- My Aunt's daughter (so technically my cousin) is turning 3 and her birthday party is TBA later.
  10. Finally...the last week of August- Hubby and I both have a few days off together. A little mini vacation. I am looking forward to it.
Whew! My fingers are tired from all that typing. Lots of happy times and memories. It's going to be a lot of fun. We just get busier after this month. If you can believe that. I love all the different things that go on and celebrations and parties that take place. We get to see family and friends and catch up with them. Fun times!

This week's menu:
  • Monday- Spaghetti with salad
  • Tuesday- leftovers
  • Wednesday- Pizza for Ducky's birthday and ice cream for dessert
  • Thursday- Lemon chicken with corn and rice pilaf

1 medium sized container of sherbet ice cream(orange or lime, I use orange)
1 two liter of 7-Up
(you can add fresh cut-up fruit if you want, I do not b/c I like a smooth consistency)
