Blue Ribbon Baking From A Redneck Kitchen

I have an obsession with cookbooks. I can't have enough of them. I read them for leisure and fun. So, when I saw Blue Ribbon Baking From A Redneck Kitchen by Francine Bryson I was so excited! The foreword is by Jeff Foxworthy so I was even more thrilled. I am a fan of his work so I thought this would be a fun book. I was right. There are so many wonderful and yummy recipes to try. I actually tried the Pumpkin Pie Bread on page 199. The consensus says "yummy", "delish", and "can I get some more".

Here is a little about the author Francine Bryson:

She is from Asheville, NC where she loves to bake for her family. She has been in many baking competitions including the American Baking Competition. She has won many awards for her yummy treats and decided they needed to be written in a cookbook (for which I am grateful).

Here is some info about the book:

"National pie champion, mom, homemaker, and self-proclaimed redneck, Francine Bryson won the hearts of bakers everywhere when she appeared on CBS’s The American Baking Competition and went on to become a finalist on the show. Known for her down-home Southern charm and sass (and for successfully pairing chocolate and peanut butter with bacon), Francine now shares her sought-after recipes and tips in her very first baking book."

“Here are the recipes and tricks I was taught by my Great-Granny, Granny, Nana, and Mama—the women who schooled me on the ways a Southern woman keeps a kitchen—and that I learned from twenty-plus years of competing on the baking circuit. Now you can bake up award-winning pies such as Upside-Down Apple Pie, fluffy Biscuits Like Nana Made, and irresistible treats like Soda Pop Cake and Classic Southern Lemon Bars—all so good they have made the rounds with the ladies at church, the bridge clubs, supper clubs, and mom groups for generations.”

Here are some photos from the making of the Pumpkin Pie Bread:

I did add a cream cheese frosting to the bread because..well, I just love cream cheese frosting. She did not call for that and you most certainly can eat it without the frosting. I absolutely love this bread. My mom came over to my house today and I gave her and my (very picky) step-dad a piece. They asked for the recipe it was that good.

I highly recommend this wonderful little gem of a cookbook. It is so cute and very home-y.

Game Changer Review

We are HUGE Redskins fans in my house. Hail to the Redskins!! So, when I had the opportunity to review a book written by their current QB Kirk Cousins I was thrilled. I know he is a man of God but reading his book has given me a new perspective. He gives God all of the glory for his talent and fortune. He recognizes that without God he would be nothing and nobody. He doesn't shove his faith down the readers throat. He just gives you his personal story and how God was weaved throughout his entire life.

Here is a little about the book:

"Record-setting quarterback for Michigan State University and draft pick of the NFL's Washington Redskins, Kirk Cousins pens an accessible and compelling collection of life principles for readers young and old. With engaging stories from his award-winning career, Cousins illustrates core biblical concepts while encouraging good choices, and, in the process, readers get an inside look at high-stakes football as well as the personal and highly motivating reflections of a much-respected athlete.
Now in softcover, Game Changer is a great pick for parents, coaches, athletes, camps, FCA groups, and family explorations. It is not a self-glorifying biography or a sterile collection of dos and don'ts, but rather a dispatch from a real Christian life-with all its ups and downs-lived under the bright lights of college and professional football."
He shares his own personal stories of trials and triumphs and how God got him through it all. I highly recommend this book. Kirk Cousins shares his heart and is a wonderful role model for any young man (or woman). He is a great guy to look up to and he puts God first in his life.

Blessings,
Kristy

Treasury of Bible Stories {Review & Giveaway}

Who doesn't love a good children's bible? We have quite a few in our collection. You see, people give them to you when you have three little boys who are eager to learn more about Jesus. So, when this new book was up for review I quickly jumped on board. Treasury of Bible Stories (by Kelly Pulley) was written for children ages 4-8. That works out perfectly since my oldest 2 boys are 4 and almost 6 (he insists I say that!).

One of my favorite features of this book is the rhyming aspect. As a young girl I loved to write poems. I only wrote poems that rhymed. I don't know why but I love when things rhyme. So, for me, this was a major score. The second wonderful thing are the beautiful illustrations. My boys are very visual learners. If they can see a picture of what I am reading they comprehend the information better. We are currently using this as our bible reading for our homeschool. They are enjoying the stories and are gaining a deeper knowledge of Jesus through this wonderful and sweet book.

Here is a little about the book:
"Featuring lyrical stories that will make you laugh, this colorful collection is perfect for reading out loud. Magnificent Tales are rhyming Bible stories with clever art and clear lessons the whole family will enjoy. The stories and illustrations are so engaging that you won’t grow tired of reading a Magnificent Tale night after night! From “The Salty Tale of Noah’s Ark” to “The Lasting Story of the Last Supper,” the rhyming tales in this book remind us that God loves His people—in the Bible and today!"

Here is a little about the author:
"Kelly Pulley has illustrated dozens of books in The Beginner’s Bible series and has authored and illustrated several other children’s books, including Ten Unusual Features of Lulu McDunn and The Cycling Wangdoos. He enjoys spending time with his four grown children and his beautiful wife, Vickie, in the Nashville area."

There is also a video about the book on YouTube:

If you think your family would like a copy of Treasury of Bible Stories please let me know by commenting below. I will be giving away 1 copy to a reader. Giveaway ends on September 23, 2014.

Dolphin Tale 2 Curriculum Review and Giveaway!

Homeschoolers made the first Dolphin Tale movie so popular that the producers decided to make another one! How exciting is that? I have the wonderful privilege of reviewing the curriculum that HomeschoolMovieClub.com has come out with. It is also part of Classical Conversations homeschool group. I don't personally use CC. I am more of a Charlotte Mason style homeschooling mama. I am currently homeschooling a 5 year old boy, a 4 year old boy, and wrestling a 19 month old boy. We love to watch movies and do fun activities. This curriculum goes well with what we are looking for.

Dolphin Tale 2 will be in theaters on September 12. Please check your local movie theater for times and go check it out. But, first I will let you know about the curriculum so you can be prepared after your family views it.

The lessons include a short video as well as some print outs that you can download. Each lesson is so organized and very well prepared. Your child will learn biology, vocabulary, art, and math.

My children enjoyed these lessons very much. Since all of mine are still "littles" the lessons were short enough to keep their attention. I really hope you go to the website and check it out.

Click here to download the FREE curriculum. Yes, FREE. You can't beat that.

Click here to see the movie website.

You can also click here to visit the Clearwater Marine Aquarium to see Winter live! My kids loved this!

This whole curriculum is great because you can study dolphins for a couple of weeks and then end by going on a field trip to see Dolphin Tale 2 at the movie theater. Tomorrow, Friday, September 12 is Homeschool Day. Go to your local theater and check it out for yourself.

Here is another cool thing. You can enter to win some cool Dolphin Tale 2 gear.
A pair of sunglasses and a t-shirt. I also received these items and they are very cool!

To enter to win these cool prizes just leave a comment at the bottom of my page letting me know how many kids your homeschool or send to public/private school. Only one entry per person please. Winner will be announced on September 18, 2014. Here are the winner guidelines:

The Good News About Marriage

Are you ready for some great news about marriage? Shaunti Feldhahn (along with her researcher Tally Whitehead) has written a new book. It's called "The Good News About Marriage -Debunking Discouraging Myths About Marriage And Divorce". I have the privilege of reviewing it. I love books about marriage and how to improve. This book is more of a statistical book. She compares statistics that are quoted often such as "50% of marriage end in divorce". Shaunti Feldhahn and her team did a ton of research to come up with new statistics. What we have been hearing on the news and in churches is false. I do not like to reveal information in a book I am reviewing but I will say that the "real" number of divorces isn't even close to 50%.

Here is a little info about Shaunti Feldhahn:

"Shaunti Feldhahn is the best-selling author of For Women Only and other books with sales of more than two million copies in 22 languages. With a master’s degree from Harvard, Shaunti uses her analytical skills to uncover life-changing surprises about our most important relationships. Her research has been featured on The Today Show, Focus on the Family radio, in Cosmopolitan magazine, and in the New York Times. She and her husband, Jeff, have two children and live in Atlanta."

For more about the author please visit http://waterbrookmultnomah.com/author-spotlight.php?authorid=74984

To read a chapter from "The Good News About Marriage" please go HERE.

"Divorce is not the biggest threat to marriage. Discouragement is." -Shaunti Feldhahn

Please check out this great book because it will change how you think about marriage. I was blown away by some of the findings. I found the fact that most marriages are still happy ones very enlightening. It is a wonderful, optimistic book and will encourage you greatly in your own marriage. I highly recommend that you add this to your book collection.

Kristy
